Ornamental metal fencing frames a yard without blocking a mountain view, and because it’s open, wind passes through instead of pushing on it. It’s common along view lots in Somersett, Northwest Reno and the South Meadows area, around pools, and on front yards where height is limited.
Steel, aluminum or true wrought iron
- Ornamental steel (what most people mean by “wrought iron” today) is strong and good for security and driveway gates. Powder coating and touch-ups keep rust away.
- Aluminum doesn’t rust, is lighter and costs less to install. It’s a favorite for pool barriers.
- Custom wrought iron is hand-fabricated and priced accordingly.
Cost
A 2026 Reno installer guide lists ornamental iron or aluminum at about $25 to $50 per linear foot. HomeGuide’s national figures run about $25 to $75 for aluminum and $50 to $85 for wrought iron. Custom designs and gates go higher. See the cost guide.
Where it fits
- Front yards where Reno allows only 4 feet within the required front yard
- Pool enclosures (see pool and HOA-compliant fences)
- Fences next to open space and drainageways, where Reno requires open fencing above 4 feet
- Driveway entries with automatic gates

Frequently asked questions
Does ornamental steel rust in Reno?
Reno’s dry climate is easier on steel than coastal areas, but chips in the coating will rust. Inspect and touch up yearly, especially near sprinklers.
Is aluminum strong enough for a gate?
For walk gates and many pool gates, yes. For wide or automated driveway gates, steel is usually preferred.
