After a big wind event in the Truckee Meadows, fence repair calls spike. Most of them trace back to the same few problems: posts that weren’t deep enough, rotted at the base, or carrying a solid panel that acts like a sail.

Common Reno fence repairs

  • Leaning or snapped posts. The fix is usually replacing the post and setting it deeper in fresh concrete, below the 24-inch frost line. Replacing a wood post with a galvanized steel post is a common upgrade.
  • Blown-out panels and boards. Re-hanging panels, replacing broken boards and adding rails or a top cap to stiffen the section.
  • Vinyl panels popped out of rails. Often a sign of flexing posts. Reinforcing the post fixes the root cause.
  • Sagging or dragging gates. New hinges, anti-sag kits, or a heavier gate post.
  • Rot at the ground line. Soil, mulch and sprinkler water against wood boards and posts.

Repair or replace?

If a few posts are bad but the boards are sound, repair makes sense. If most posts are rotting or the fence leans along its whole length, replacement is often better value. In Sparks and unincorporated Washoe County, replacing less than 100 linear feet with the same material, location and height is on the permit-exempt list. The City of Reno requires a permit for fences, so ask your contractor whether your repair needs one.

Cost

HomeGuide (2026) puts typical fence repairs at $300 to $900, minor fixes like a single board at $100 to $300, major repairs at $900 to $2,500, and gate repairs at $50 to $400. A 2026 Reno cost source lists local fence repair at about $154 to $617 per job.

Shared fences and insurance

If the fence is on a shared lot line, talk with your neighbor before work starts. Wind damage may be covered by homeowners insurance depending on your policy, so photograph damage before cleanup.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair just one section after a windstorm?

Yes. Contractors routinely replace a few posts and panels. Matching weathered wood or discontinued vinyl can be the hardest part.

Why did my fence blow over when the neighbor’s didn’t?

Usually post depth, post condition or panel style. Solid panels on shallow or rotted posts fail first.

How fast can someone come out?

It depends on the season. After big wind events, contractors are busiest, so call early and secure or remove loose panels in the meantime.
