The gate is the part of the fence that moves, so it’s the part that fails first. In Reno, wind slams gates, freeze-thaw shifts gate posts, and a sagging gate drags across the concrete until the latch no longer lines up.
Gate types
- Walk gates (single, typically 3 to 4 feet wide) for side yards.
- Double drive gates for RV, trailer and boat access, very common in Reno and Sparks backyards.
- Sliding gates for sloped driveways or where there’s no room to swing.
- Automatic gates with swing or slide operators, keypads, remotes and safety sensors.
Built to stay square
- Heavier gate posts set deeper in concrete
- Steel gate frames or anti-sag kits on wood gates
- Wind-rated latches and drop rods to hold double gates shut on gusty afternoons
- For pools, self-closing and self-latching hardware (see pool fences)
Automatic gate considerations
Ask about power (hardwired, battery or solar), battery backup for outages, manual release, and photo-eye or edge sensors so the gate can’t close on a person, pet or car. Openers need to be rated for the gate’s weight and length, and wind adds load on solid gates.
Cost
HomeGuide (2026) lists automatic driveway gates at about $1,600 to $13,000 installed, adding an opener to an existing gate at about $400 to $5,500, and gate repairs at about $50 to $400. A 2026 Reno guide lists single gate installation at about $300 to $900 and driveway gates at about $800 to $2,000 for manual gates.

Frequently asked questions
How wide should an RV gate be?
Many homeowners choose 12 feet or wider for RV access, but measure your vehicle and the turning path. Confirm side-yard access with your HOA.
Can my existing gate be automated?
Often, if the gate and posts are sturdy and swing freely. Your contractor will check weight, hinges and post condition.
Why does my gate keep sagging?
Undersized posts, missing diagonal bracing or loose hinges. A heavier post and anti-sag kit usually fix it.
