A privacy fence is the most requested fence in Reno and Sparks backyards, and also the one that works hardest against the wind. A solid 6-foot fence presents a big surface to a gusty afternoon, so the structure behind it matters.
How tall can a privacy fence be?
In the City of Reno, fences 6 feet or less may be built on side and rear lot lines, but only 4 feet is allowed in the required front yard. Sparks allows 6 feet in most locations but limits fences in front and exterior side setbacks to 3 feet (4 feet if at least 50% open). Unincorporated Washoe County limits fences in the required front yard to 4.5 feet and 6 feet elsewhere. Taller fences may be possible in some locations with a permit. See the permit guide.
Materials
- Wood (cedar or treated pine): lowest cost, classic look. See wood fences.
- Vinyl: low maintenance; choose reinforced posts for solid panels. See vinyl fences.
- Composite: wood look with less maintenance, higher price.
- Chain link with slats: budget screening, though less private.
Privacy without fighting the wind
- Board-on-board gives full visual privacy with small air gaps.
- Shadowbox alternates boards on each side of the rails.
- Steel posts with wood or composite panels resist twisting.
- Closer post spacing on the windward side of the lot.
Before you build
Confirm lot lines (Reno suggests a survey), call 811, check HOA guidelines, and talk to neighbors about shared fences.

Frequently asked questions
Can I build an 8-foot privacy fence?
Generally not on a typical residential lot line without approval. Reno allows taller fences outside setback areas in some cases and where lots abut arterials. Check with your jurisdiction.
What’s the cheapest privacy fence?
Pressure-treated pine is usually the lowest-cost full-privacy option. Chain link with slats can cost less but provides less privacy.
